In the beginning, there was...a nerd?

"Start by doing what is necessary; Then do what's possible; And suddenly you're doing the impossible."

- Saint Francis of Assisi

Getting to this point, the point where I can start a blog and actually have something to say, well, it was nowhere in sight--until today. It comes from false starts, late nights, and more cups of tea than I count. A novel that was born out of, crazy as it sounds, a dream—yes, a real dream, from my head, in the middle of a REM cycle—which was inspired by reading classical authors and watching hours and hours of period dramas, of which I am a total nerd.

The main problem I have faced with this first book is just getting it done.

Honestly, I don’t know how some writers crank out book after book or the author of a certain famous boy wizard—how her books just keep getting longer and more complex. I have a folder full of started projects, some with a good chunk of work done, others just blurbs, but none-the-less, I’d like to get to ‘em. But I feel like until this one is done, I can’t move on permanently.

Though in some ways, my not getting it done has been a blessing. You see, I started this thing in high-school while visiting my dad on summer break. It came to a grand total of 20 pages and some 9,000 words. So, here I am at 26, with two degrees in music and eleven years on from that summer. I like to hope I have grown in body, but more importantly experience. But who can put an age limit on adolescence?

You know, I once had a creative writing teacher, about four years ago now, who said nothing will ever come from the project I started in high school…well poo, poo, Mister! I am now on my second re-write. And having added 53,000 words (and counting), several new characters, and the real grit and polish of life, I feel that if I don’t get it done at this point, I might as well commit myself because I will go utterly mad.

Now, back to the blog, which I have read and re-read is important as a writer in the connected 21st century. It’s exciting—daunting—but has definitely been therapeutic up to now. I should have spent this midnight oil on my book because there are only so many hours I can dedicate to this passion, but instead, I have pulled forth a website and a blog.

Now, if only my book could get done in as little time as it has taken me to write-up this introduction. Well, back to the diamond mines “Heigh-ho!”

P.S. Can you tell me what time period my book is set in from this picture?
